Bethania Therapeutic Community
Support for the rehabilitation and social inclusion of women with addiction problems in Uruguay
For the past three years, the Azvi Group Foundation, through COINTER Uruguay, has been working closely with the Bethania Therapeutic Community, a pioneering social project dedicated to the comprehensive care and rehabilitation of women with addiction problems and those in other situations of high social vulnerability in the department of Canelones (Uruguay).
The Foundation’s commitment was crucial to the reopening of the Bethania Women’s Therapeutic Community, a unique facility in the country which resumed its activities after having been forced to suspend operations during the pandemic due to a lack of funding. Thanks to a partnership between the Grupo Azvi Foundation, the Canelones Departmental Government and the Bethania organisation itself, the centre was able to resume providing specialist care for women undergoing recovery from addiction and associated mental health issues.
Located in the Progreso and Canelones area, Bethania runs a residential therapeutic programme that combines medical care, psychological support, social support and community reintegration programmes. Its work is specifically aimed at promoting the holistic recovery of women who, in many cases, have experienced exclusion, violence or severe social vulnerability.
The Grupo Azvi Foundation’s support is not limited to setting up the initiative. Over the years, the organisation has helped to sustain and consolidate its work, ensuring the continuity of a project that creates new opportunities for recovery, independence and social integration for dozens of women and their families.
As part of this partnership and our shared commitment to supporting the most vulnerable people, the Grupo Azvi Foundation will extend its support to a new centre that Bethania is setting up in the department of Rocha. This facility will specialise in providing residential, medical and therapeutic care for women with co-occurring conditions who have been living on the streets, offering a comprehensive response to situations of extreme social exclusion and supporting their recovery and social reintegration in conditions of dignity and safety.
